The need for artificial lighting at night is one of the oldest fundamental necessities of the Fire and Emergency Services industries. Until recently, lighting technology was fairly limited, and the application of that technology was not very easy. In the last 10 years, with the advent of the high output LED, scene lighting has become one of the most innovative areas of our industry. As technology continues to change, a fundamental understanding of how to APPLY the technology is essential for the modern firefighter or specification committee. In this class, Sam Massa explores the technologies of past, present, and future, and how they can be applied to your fire scene to help rescue workplace injuries and improve your effectiveness after dark.

Course objectives are as follows:

• Understand differences in technology types (LED, HID, and Halogen)
• Explain the relationship between Lumens and Lux (using firefighter host stream analogy)
• Explore how PLACEMENT effects the ability to work at night
• Understand what NFPA has to say about lighting on and near fire apparatus
• Understand how COLOR temperature can be used to your advantage

A version of this course has been given at the Fire Dept Safety Officers of America Apparatus Symposium, and material used in this course has been published in Fire Apparatus Magazine and other industry publications. This course will be offered at the Fire Truck Training Conference in 2018 and available in pieces on our website (www.hivizleds.com).
